Call Off the Granholm Speculation?

The event that’s bringing Gov. Jennifer Granholm (D-Mich.) to the White House tomorrow might be the announcement of new CAFE standards. It’s a marquee event, and Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (R-Calif.) is en route, even though tomorrow is election day for a series of Arnold-backed California ballot initiatives.

Granholm is still the most sensible, non-judge/academia choice … makes a real statement and hard for Republicans to attack a governor for taking positions when governors are popularly elected.

Also, despite Obama's stated desire for empathy, I think Granholm can thread that needle nicely. County counsels and city attorneys are typically on the frontlines of implementing and being affected by SCOTUS decisions (in some respects, more than states). Granholm's background will speak to that in volumes, without coming across as activist.
