Club for Growth Speechless on Specter Switch
Tuesday, April 28, 2009 at 12:11 pm
I just called the Club for Growth for a reaction to Sen. Arlen Specter’s (?-Pa.) announcement that he is switching to the Democratic Party and found Nachama Soloveichik, who is about to leave the Club to work for Republican 2010 Pennsylvania primary candidate and former Club head Pat Toomey, more or less speechless.
“I’m still at a loss,” said Soloveichik. “I don’t know if we’re going to put anything out.” (Legally, because she is moving over to the campaign, Soloveichik cannot put together the Club’s statement. This news broke at an inconvenient time for the group.)
The Club was taken completely by surprise and is not yet discussing the effect that Toomey’s decision may have had on forcing Specter over to the Democrats. They “found out when the rest of the world found out,” as one Club member put it.
Update: The Club for Growth says it will release a statement later today.

Ha ha ha. The Club for Growth's support of Toomey was a direct and foreseeable cause of Specter changing sides. Someone needs to teach these guys a lesson in politics.

They don't understand. Purity is all that matters to them.

the gibbles are in the square, dancing, singing, while in east berlin, the pavement continues to mow the grass.

President John Kennedy: “Sometimes a Party asks too much.” Ditto “a Club.” Painful lesson for them, but I doubt they'll actually learn anything from it.

Let's not forget to thank Hillary for her part in this.
During the primary 200,000 republican moderates switched to democratic registration to be able to participate in the democratic primary.

I almost feel sorry for them (almost!), and can fully understand them being speechless–didn't Specter state, point-blank, just a few weeks ago that he was NOT switching parties, period?
Yeah, I know, politicians lie all the time, but still…
The part I don't get is him making such a specific point of stating, flat-out, that he's NOT voting for the EFCA. Isn't that pretty much the key to winning as a Dem in PA? If he's still voting against it, what's the point of the switch at all?
Methinks some backroom dealing has been done–perhaps he agreed to vote party line for a mess of other stuff in return for getting a “pass” on EFCA (ie, other Dems agree to still support him even though they know he won't vote for that bill)?

Republican “inclusiveness” seems to be working quite well. Keep it up guys!

The Club for Growth? Oh, you mean The Club For Rich and Clueless White Guys That Can't Read The Writing on The Wall?
Specter's a nitwit, but he'll beat Toomey like a drum in a statewide election; if charisma free Bob Casey could trounce man-on-dog sex advocate Rick Santorum by record margins, backbone free Arlen will win by even more.

They're surprised? Um, why? They're the cause of this—if the Clubbers had left him alone, Specter would still be a Republican.

Republicans have managed to PUSH the Senator to the other sides. If they don't watch it, they'll push Maine's two Senators over, too. OsiSpeaks.com

What the hell are you talking about? Sen. Spector switched party labels, and you post nonsense about a non-existent city? You are missing the monumental momentousness of this gargantuan event. You sir are obtuse!

I am not surprise by the switch. He is just going to the party he has been voting with for years. Check out my article on his political history attached to my name.

More power to the Club for Growth! Perhaps they can push more moderates to the Dems. As a registered Rebublican, I feel the only hope for this party is a crisis of credibility. We're well on our way! Palin in 2012 and the Club for Growth forever!

Good Ridence. He lost my vote when he said yes to the spendulas, never let a crisis go to waste, poverty spreading bill.I say split this country in half.Capitalism(PURE) and Obama land. But of course in 10 years when we hold 75% of all thw money, the liberals would find a way to steal it,for their poor Socialist country. They would say we tricked them into taking the wrong half.Split the money, then come back every 10 years to take it.

Yay, Ed. Tell you what, we'll take the other two Republican Senators who voted for the “spendulus” if you want to get rid of them.
As for your “split the country” idea, let me quote you the Pledge of Allegiance “One Nation, Under God, Indivisible, with Liberty and Justice for All.” So splitting the country is out (not to mention that after Obama won 365 electoral votes to McCain's 173, we're not exactly split 50-50). But you and your fellow travelers are free to move to someplace without a “socialist” government. I'd recommend Somalia, there's basically no government at all. No doubt such a place is ripe for wealth creation. Good luck!

I wish these greedy folks would be speechless much more often. Maybe going back to Eisenhower's 91% top tax bracket would help.
