Concerned Women Asking About Swine Flu Panic

By
Monday, April 27, 2009 at 4:40 pm

I was just talking to Wendy Wright, the president of the conservative group Concerned Women for America, about the nomination of Gov. Kathleen Sebelius (D-Kans.) to run the Department of Health and Human Services. The group opposes the nomination, and Wright is raising some questions about the timing of the swine flu crackdown so close to tomorrow’s cloture vote.

“Some people think that declaring a state of emergency about the flu was a political thing to push the Sebelius nomination through,” said Wright. She pointed to news stories that ask whether the slow-walking of the Sebelius choice will hurt the response to the flu. “If there’s even a hint that [Department of Homeland Security] is manipulating the health situation to push a political appointee through, well, it almost defies imagination that they’d be willing to that.”

Wright said that she’d heard the speculation “on talk radio,” and wanted to be skeptical, but “there’s too much of a basis in that argument to easily dismiss it.”

Let me get this straight. We were scared shitless at every turn by the Bush crowd screaming “WMD!!!” and “TERRORISTS!!!” to the point where there was a run on duct tape and plastic sheeting and we stooped to heinous practices like TORTURE to protect America for the very real threat we were constantly told was just around the corner — especially at ELECTION TIME…

But swine flu is political?

Okie dokie.

Let me get this straight.

It's been quite apparent for some years now that the one of the very few things at which American conservative activists truly excel is psychological projection.

Rgiht. This is also the reason why the 20 other countries so far affected have raised their alert levels. To get Kathleen Sebelius confirmed by the Senate.

Concerned Women is an extremist right wing group started by Phyllis Schaffly. They are very strong on being anti choice. if they are not members, Sarah Palin and Michelle Bachmann would fit the profile. If they are tying the flu outbreak with a cabinet nomination I would say that they are going well beyond the have no decency standard set by their beloved role model–the late Joe McCarhty,

Is this woman suggesting that someone in the Obama administration deliberately started the epidemic that so far has killed over 140 people?! Is this woman projecting what she would do in similar circumstances? Where is there any basis at all in that argument?

Paranoia is a very debilitating disease and this woman, actually the whole right wing, needs to go into treatment if they expect to ever accomplish anything in their lives.

I love that the wingnuts think that Obama is an evil mastermind. Not just evil, but a criminal genius on par with Lex Luthor and Dr. Doom. So in order to push through his nominee for HHS (his second choice no less), Obama engineered a biological threat south of the border, knowing it would migrate north to the U.S. JUST so he could push through his cabinet appointment. Sure hundreds have died in Mexico and there's worry about a global pandemic, but it's all part of Obama's plan to install pro-Abortionist Sebelius as Sec HHS so he can finish off those dastardly babies once and for all… BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar, and sometimes playing politics is the wrong thing to do, boys and girls.

It was supposedly a good thing to let elections mean something, and to give a president his choices to head the various agencies. At least, it was that way with Bush. What's changed? And why shouldn't the nation ask questions of so-called “conservatives” who put politics before the government's ability to respond to a crisis?

You know, sooner or later the shrinking creature that used to be a viable adult party is going to have to face reality, and start competing on the basis of ideas and stop this obstructionist, ideological crap. The nation voted, and you lost. When are you going to face that reality and start being serious again?

Only someone totally devoid of brains and/or compassion would talk like the Swine flu problem is a ploy. Many people in Mexico are already died. Of course, if one has no compassion and has no concern for others, I guess it would cause one to have that attitude. However, then if that person gets Swine Flu, I still want them treated because as a nurse, I have seen the destruction caused by these virulent organisms that attack people both on the far right and the far left, equally. This sort of problem is a great equalizer and I do not wish it on even the dolts who think of getting prepared for the disease is a political ploy. That sort of person appears to have little concern for their fellow human beings, but still, as I said, I do not wish Swine Flu upon them. But Republicans, look at yourselves in the mirror as this epidemic hits even your treasured families. This very attitude explains why so many of us bolted from the Republican Party. Still, even after your obstruction, I will really feel sorry for you if you get Swine Flu..

If your serious about your quote ““Some people think that declaring a state of emergency about the flu was a political thing to push the Sebelius nomination through,” Then volunteer to go to Mexico city and assist those sick and inflicted with the swine flu. OH wait that would mean you'd actually have to live your faith as apposed to just shrilling in the public square for hire.

ENOUGH. You and your gang have used the soap box for far to long with NOTHING to show for it – except of course if you want to count all those lost House and Senate races, destruction of the GOP, the increased numbers of disenchanted older and younger generation of Christians in your tactics and multiple campaigns of lies and deceit. Not to mention all of those who might have heard the voice of the Lord – but instead have become distracted by your false claims, irrational theories and fear tactics that are paraded as “concern for our country”. THE RESULT: Many have given up on churches on listening to what the real message of Christ is all about – because of people just like you. You've traded souls for votes for over 20 years… so how has all that worked out for you? – shameful.

Actually the typical flu kills mostly babies and elderly. The problem with this virus that jumps species and then mutates to allow human to human contact, is that humans have no immunity. Thus, it causes the immune system to react TOO strongly, leading to lungs filled with fluid and basically, drowning. However, it is those with the most developed immune systems – healthy adults – that are most likely to launch such a response. Thus, in a pandemic, it is exactly opposite the normal flu – the most likely to die are healthy adults, and the least likely are those with weaker immune systems, small children and the elderly.

Comment posted April 27, 2009 @ 7:56 pm

There's still a quite decent chance – though the CDC quite sensibly is not taking that chance – that this flu episode will fizzle out.

But Wendy Wright is making me nervous. In recent years, the right wing has been consistently wrong about virtually every matter of fact they address. So if it nw becomes right wing dogma that the Mexican flu outbreak is nothing serious, the chances are greatly magnified that we're in for a serious pandemic.

Please, please, Wendy. Take it back. Trumpet your fear of this flu from the rooftops, like you did your fear of Saddam's nukes, and his tight connections with Al Qaeda, and over-regulation of derivatives, and the threat to America's financial stability if Clinton's surpluses were allowed to continue too long, and Obama's secret plans to turn the U.S. into a Muslim theocracy. Then the rest of us can all breathe just a little easier.

As a staunch Republican for most of the past twenty years (disclosure: I voted for Obama, but would have voted for McCain if not for his choice of Sarah Palin), I had always had this vision of the angry, crazy left. I could look at my friends and say, except for Rush Limbaugh, Republicans are the more reasonable, rational party. I don't recognize what the Republican party has turned into under the leadership of George Bush, Rush Limbaugh, and Ann Coulter.

In the past I could dismiss these fringe elements of the party, marginalize them. But now, their numbers are too great to ignore and they are too core to the real identity of the Republican party for me to have any respect for what the party has become. This is another incident of right-wing conservative extremism that is really turning me off. I cannot believe Wendy Wright would choose to politicize a life and death issue like this, but I am not surprised.

How things change—now the 21st century version of the Birchers are the driving force in the Republican Party, and the Republicans, elected or not, who have the courage to openly criticize them are too tiny in number to be meaningful.

The DHS did not declare the health emergency, HHS did. Napolitano said as much at the briefing. The acting secretary at HHS is a hold over from the Bush administration. Who knows why he wasn't at the briefing. It was a hallmark of the Bush years to be absent in a time of crisis, maybe he is just falling back on old habbits..

Get a clue.

Someone is confusing Bush administration tactics with Obama administration tactics. It is not hard to imagine an administration that invented a war to get their way also inventing a fake health crisis. But Obama, on the other hand is *not* using a real health crisis to further his political goals. In fact, it is the opposite. 150 people have died and Obama hasn't brought up the nomination at all. Instead, he is more concerned with the threat Americans are facing.

The contrast between Bush and Obama could not be more stark.

Sebulous is not concerned about women, nor the unborn future taxpayers of our country. Why is Planned Parenthood and other abortion advocates not giving the public the following info about women who have had abortions – like the suicide rate that is so high? how about reporting all of the other psychological problems that happen after one does this to themselves as well as an unborn child? Pro-Abortion advocates don't seem to be stupid – but rather educated women – so why don't they look deeper, and be glad they were not aborted themselves?

You too are a kook. Ya think the mexican government agreed to have people die in their capital city for Sebelius? Or maybe some Americans sent by the Obama administration send some clandestine types to plant the virus in Mexico City, New York, California, and other cities? How about the international World Health Organization? That lists the US at the bottom of health among industrialized nations. You think they agreed to raise the Pandemic threat level to help Sebelius pass cloture?

Anonymous sources in the Family Research Council confirm that after exhaustive laboratory analysis of recorded excerpts from Obama's speeches during campaign 2008, when the speeches are played backwards, the words “yes we can” are heard as hail Satan.

When the anonyous source was asked how he obtained this important new information, he said Bigfoot told him.

Interesting viewpoint. It is sick how many comments here entirley focus on the democrat-republican divide. Bush violated the US constitution with the patriot act among others and was responsible for many bad choices. obama is merely continuing that legacy. This is not about republicans nor is it about democrats, it is about America!

I am thoroughly surprised that the author of this articlke failed to mentioned how easily the flu got into the US. While the news reports tightened security at formal borders, we have almost no formal border with mexico. Why is there not a defendable border with mexico? Build a real border and defend it. When illegals can merely walk across, they bring with them more illegals, terrorists, drugs and disease. IIllegals should be deported or executed. The border should have been built under bush's watch. It wasn't. obama should build it, but instead he is going to make every criminal illegal a US citizen.

Someone made a comment about obama ordering the execution of the pirates. Check your facts. Obama over rode the captain of the bainbridge's authority to make a decision. obama prohibited the use of force of ANY kind as long as hostage negotitations were taking place. SEALs were not allowed in the water. When captain phillips jumped overboard, no action was taken to defend him, per obama's orders. Did you(yes you reading this) ever question why nothing was done when captain phillips risked his life by jumping overboard and swimming towards the massive US ship. It was not until Saturday that obama allowed the captain of the bainbridge to use his judgement on force. It was the captain of the bainbridge who authorized the appropriate use of force against the pirates, not obama.

Question authority, while it is still legal.

Since it is not we Obama voters who spent the past eight years equating protest with treason, rest assured that your right to question authority will be zealously protected, unlike the previous administration that spent its free time looking for loopholes in the 4th amendment.

Incidentally, the immigration angle really has little relationship to the flu cases discovered to date. Many of the cases in this country have been found in American citizens and college students rerturning from a spring break vacation in Mexico.

However you want to parse the facts of the rescue by the SEALS, we all know that the people who are bending themselves into logical pretzels claiming that the President deserves no credit at all, would be among the first to lay 100% of the blame at his feet if the situation had ended with the loss of American lives.

The World Health Organization is not a part of the U.S. government. They have issued alerts indicating that they're concerned that swine flu could be a new pandemic. In Mexico, the President of that country has closed *all* the schools because of fears of a far greater outbreak.

If you want, you can choose to believe that the U.S. government is playing up the fear angle, but I don't really see how that tracks. Please realize that whatever is going on is qualitatively different from and quantitatively greater than all the hub-bub over bird flu or SARS.

There are many ex governors and others with experience in public management. If Gov. Sebelius is not able to pass Congressional scrutiny, it is very easy for the President to nominate another candidate.

To say that she is the “only person in America” who can do this job and therefore must be confirmed, regardless of any questions about her record or her abilities, is irrational and illogical.

Democrat Senator Charles Schumer always said that the Senate is not to be a “rubber stamp” for presidential nominees; unfortunately, that applies to Gov. Sebelius as well as everyone else.

njreader101

If the President will not nominate another candidate for HHS, one who does not have the ethical problems or the political entanglements that Gov. Sebelius has, but simply insists, “The swine flu is here, so the Senate must confirm my nominee,” then the allegation that the swine flu is being used to rush through an otherwise unacceptable nominee to HHS is quite credible.

If and when the President nominates a more trustworthy nominee, then we will have a director of HHS, If the swine flu makes that imperative, then the President should find a more acceptable nominee; he is the one who is delaying the process, not the US Senate, which is charged with the responsibility of examining presidential nominees before they are confirmed.

Leave it to right wingers to concoct some sinister conspiracy. It is how they conducted the entire 2008 campaign. You would think that the results of that election would have taught them a lesson. No they never have any evidence of their misleading and false statements about a womens right to chose. It is the law of the land and has been for decades now. Real science and historical evidence shows that even if abortion is illegal, women will still get them in unsafe and unsanitary ways.

That the only way to reduce the number of abortions is through education about and easy access to all forms of birth control. What Carole wants is more WHITE babies, right? She wants to be every womens moral judge and jury combined. Stay out of my private life Carole, you are not going to make any life decisions for me, ever. And dont tell me you do any good whatsoever for the women of this country.

Planned Parenthood does more good for women in America than all of the anti abortion groups combined. What Carole is cannot be called pro-life, they are pro-fetus and care nothing about the lives of women or children in this nation. If they did care they would realize that Planned Parenthood is an excellent organization that helps women and children everyday.

If the right wing is so concerned about 'abortion' then they should also be for single payer health care, money for education, Head Start, universal daycare and other programs to help children AFTER they are born.

think about that Carole.

The Obama Administation IS playing politics with the Swine Flu.
Why has the Mexican US border not been shut down to prevent more infected Mexicans from spreading the virus nation wide?
Why has the Obama administration forbid the border patrol from wearing face masks to cut down on exposure to the virus?

HISPANIC VOTES, THAT'S WHY.

They don't want to offend the Hispanic vote with medical masks and they don't want to close the border and make Hispanics mad.

Its all about Democrat POWER.

The Hispanic vote is more important to Democrats than the lives of millions of Americans potentionally infected with swine flu.

The Obama administation claims the barn door is already open, so why close the border.

What kind of fuzzy math is that? Lets say 50 infected people got into the states, so we don't bother closing the door and just let 1000's of more infected Mexicans in to spread it all over the country????

Its all about VOTES.
The Democrats don't care if millions become sick and thousands die.
All that matters is they don't offend the Hispanic vote.

Also, if there is a major outbreak, what better way to ram socialized medicine down America's throat?

The Democrats never waste a crisis to further their agenda.

They spend a lot of time finalizing Download Windows 7  but when they decide to contact the Win 7  for the price quotes and delivery time, they generally end up realizing that the Microsoft Windows 7  from which they had selected the Windows 7 , belongs to a different country and the buy microsoft office 2007 cannot export to a their Windows 7 Professional. The simple solution to Windows 7 Professional  would have been, assuming that the Buy Windows 7 buyer resides in India, to search for the keyword “Microsoft Windows 7 India” or “Windows 7 Home Premium  in India” instead of the keyword “Download Office 2010” because when the buyer searched for “buy office 2007”, sites from different countries showed up, microsoft office professional 2010 plus might have had good designs Office 2007 download were not available in window 7 but they were of no use. The purchase windows 7 advantage of using a location such as Office 2007 Ultimate, in case it suits the buyers, office professional 2007 plus can go and checkout their Office 2007 Key and maybe get a better design microsoft office downloads has recently become popular but is not ms office 2007 professional on the website.

With Replica Dolce & Gabbanathe whole thing which seems to be developing inside this specific subject matter, all your opinions are relatively exciting. Nonetheless, I beg your pardon, because I can not give credence to your entire suggestion, all be it radical none the less. It would seem to me that your remarks are generally not totally rationalized and in fact you are generally yourself not really totally confident of the assertion.
