In order to shift the tide we need to focus on overhauling the tax code to favor asset development, and not debt. Mortgage interest deductions and favorable loans just increase the incentive for all Americans to take on more debt. These kind of policies, while having good intentions, just exacerbate the problem. Consider the FairTax at fairtax.org, which shifts us away from an income tax and towards a consumption tax -- while providing a prebate which provides money that would be spent on taxes for essential goods prior to it being spent. This tax replaces our current convoluted income AND payroll tax system and brings transparancy into the tax code, where a lot of the shortsighted policies above are hidden.
