Taegan Goddard reports that a new poll will show Sen. Jim Bunning (R-Ky.) deep in the hole against any potential Democratic candidate. One difference between Kentucky and, for example, Arkansas, where Republicans are gunning for Democratic Sen. Blanche Lincoln, is that the opposition party has a deep bench of candidates in Kentucky and a seriously lacking bench in Arkansas. Republicans control no statewide offices in Arkansas; Democrats control all the major offices in Kentucky. Republicans are almost banking on a Bunning defeat if the candidate survives a primary, which is why there’s so much focus on making up the loss by defeating Sen. Chris Dodd (D-Conn.).
