In Vietnam it translated to an estimated 2,000,000 civilian deaths in South Vietnam alone, plus the destruction of villages and denuding of the countryside. In Iraq, so far, it's meant 600,000 plus civilian casualties and an estimated 2,000,000 refugees. Even without the renewed focus promised by Gates, our brand of counterinsurgency is an unmitigated human catastrophe. Let's be clear about what our leaders are proposing: a bloody slaughter of the innocent on an even greater scale than at present. It's a fair question to ask just what exactly does the bloodless term “counterinsurgency” translate to in practice. In Vietnam it translated to an estimated 2,000,000 civilian deaths in South Vietnam alone, plus the destruction of villages and denuding of the countryside. In Iraq, so far, it's meant 600,000 plus civilian casualties and an estimated 2,000,000 refugees. Even without the renewed focus promised by Gates, our brand of counterinsurgency is an unmitigated human catastrophe.
