Another ‘Gaffe’ That Wasn’t
Wednesday, March 25, 2009 at 8:46 am
Toby Harnden, who penned a story about the president and vice president’s “top 10 gaffes” last week, does some detective work about another rumored “gaffe.” Did the president really become so TelePrompTer dependent that he accidentally thanked himself after a speech? No. Harnden has the pool report from Obama’s appearance with Irish Taioseach Brian Cowen.
Then it was Cowen’s turn, and he was in for a surprise. ‘We begin by welcoming today a strong friend of the United States,’ he said–then stopped in surprise as he realized he was reading President Obama’s speech off the teleprompter. ‘Why don’t these things work for me?’ he asked, as the crowd roared. ‘Thank you for having us. Who said these things were idiot-proof?’ Then he got his bearings and gave the same talk that he delivered in the East Room. When he ended, at 8:12, Obama stepped to the microphone and said, ‘First, I’d like to say thank you to President Obama…(much laughter). Happy Saint Patrick’s Day, everybody.’ Then we were escorted out.
It was a joke that bloggers mutated into a “gaffe.” IHatetheMedia.com even wrote a FOIA request asking the White House to “free the tape.” If it is “freed,” of course, it’ll reveal that the bloggers at IHatetheMedia don’t know how to read or do reporting.

HAAHAHAHAHAHAH! The FOIA letter was hilarious! Do these guys really take themselves seriously?

We're very serious, but we have fun too.
But yes, the FOIA request is serious, and it's in their hands now.

By the way, if it were truly a joke, why don't they just release the video, like they usually do. There is no national security issue, since reporters were there.
If it were a joke, and sure, it could have been, then Obama is holding it back not because it was a gaffe, but because he feels it could be misinterpreted as a gaffe. If that's the case, we have a president that decides on what we should or should not see, based upon if he thinks it will hurt him politically. That's a scary thought. That's a Chavez-like thought. And this is the core reason for our FOIA: the president should not decide what we should see or not see unless there is a national security risk.

Hey Mark since you seem so glued into this particular exchange can you please inform us as to what the usual amount of time an FOIA request takes and after it is processed how long it is until the video is actually released to the petitioning party?
I remember a bunch of FOIA request being ignored or refuted over the last eight years and some that are even still ongoing, so excuse me if my response seems a little dumbfounded as to all the attention being payed to such a minor incident. I am sure you would agree that even narcissism is something that many times runs hand in hand with the leaders of the free world. And I am sure you would also agree that gaffe's are part of the territory for those that speak in public so often.

The fact that he was telling a funny just makes Him more sinister and diabolical.
He must be stoped !!1

Save an envelope and a stamp.

You're an idiot.

I've noticed that you guys over at IHateTheMedia.com seem to have a little trouble recognizing when someone is making a joke. Your “reporting” seems to suggest that Simon Cowell was actually serious when he said he turned down dinner with the president.

Maybe they don’t want to release the tape because it embarrasses Cowen? It was obviously a joke, but that was completely lost on RNC leader Limbaugh and his followers.

I second that nomination for idiot. now let's spend time on something that matters.

And you're a bigger idiot. Do you think this guy isn't American? Do you think we have a potentially more competent leader in our midst? Again – on to something that matters.

I guess we should just go ahead and demand a live-feed of the Oval Office 24/7, by your logic…

Where were you guys during the Bush administration with your concern for governmental transparency?
Just saying maybe you would look like such asshats if you guys hadn't been against it before you were for it.

Gee thanks. I guess it's the opposite of being an “idiot” to make a post under the name of a Down Syndrome baby. Just continues to show us, you libs are all heart.
Oh, I see Todd is here too.

So what's wrong with these guys asking for the tape? Seems like this is the kind of thing that is routinely released. Every public utterance a president makes gets taped. It just seems odd that this one isn't being released. I voted for Obama and support most of his program, but his teleprompter problems have become embarrassing for him. Why not release it? That's the easiest way to prove or disprove the whole thing.
And by the way, my wife teaches special ed and the Trig Palin name is pretty offensive. Right or wrong on the tape issue, you should be ashamed of yourself for using that name.

In Ireland, they've taken to calling the Taioseach “Biffo,” and old Irish term that stands for “big, ignorant fool from Offaly,” or words to that effect. (Offaly is a county in Ireland, and yes, that's what Brian calls home.)

In Pictish Gaelic (or “Byronthic P- Gaelic”) the name Barack means “Large freshwater mussels.”
