Sarah Palin Works the News Cycle
Friday, March 20, 2009 at 4:49 pm
Two weeks after sending the Special Olympics a video message about her son Trig, who was born with Down Syndrome, Gov. Sarah Palin (R-Alaska) has attacked President Obama for the joke he made last night about his low bowling scores on “Late Night with Jay Leno.”
I was shocked to learn of the comment made by President Obama about Special Olympics. This was a degrading remark about our world’s most precious and unique people, coming from the most powerful position in the world. These athletes overcome more challenges, discrimination and adversity than most of us ever will. By the way, these athletes can outperform many of us and we should be proud of them. I hope President Obama’s comments do not reflect how he truly feels about the special needs community.
Benjamin Sarlin adds the necessary context about Palin and special needs funding. I’d add that it’s surprising the statement took so long — it missed the news cycle and will be lost over the weekend — and that it doesn’t acknowledge Obama’s immediate apology, instead asking whether the comment reveals how the president “truly feels” about the mentally challenged.

Alternate title: “Sarah Palin struggles to maintain the fiction that her opinion is relevant”

One of the issues I have with Palin's high-and-mighty sniping of Obama (on an unintended insult for which he took full responsibility and apologized) is that there she is, showing off her son Trig while Piper treats him like a play toy. It's cute and honest up to a point, but the point is long since past. Palin essentially was holding the kid like a prop. Her statement would have been much more meaningful and substantive if accompanied by video (as opposed to still, posed photos) of Trig succeeding as a baby in the same way those wonderful Special Olympics athletes succeed: doing amazing things that those without special needs also do.

I physically cringed when BHO made that remark last night.
You don't pick on the weak in our society- especially when you are the President of The United States.
Clueless- Classless THUG
I had a vision of Trig Palin in his mother's and Bristol's arms flashed before me.
I though about every special needs child I have ever known.
My baby brother was visually impaired- and yet— was a championship pole vaulter.
But if Barry has HIS way- the Trig Palins of the world will be “taken care of”-
By way of abortion.
Late term or otherwise.
Pure evil.
And that little “blip” about the special Olympics- was just a little glimpse into a black soul/hole.
That said- I would like to know how many Obama “brown shirts” knock on doors tomorrow- to talk to you about his hideous budget.
Talk to them.
Take up their time.
Keep them from keeping to your neighbors!!!
Call your Senators- this BUDGET must be killed!

It's only natural that you would link to Sarlin's stupid remarks. Gov. Palin forward funded education last year in anticipation of a possible economic downturn with a drop in oil prices. Alaska doesn't need so-called stimulus money for things that won't create jobs. What we need is all 50 governors turning down money that has nothing to do with creating jobs. Only job creation is going to stimulate the economy, not social engineering programs designed to burden the states with more spending once federal funding runs out.
Palin had every right in the world to criticize 0bama's clueless remark. Can you imagine the screaming that would have greated Bush if he had said that on Jay Leno.
What the heck is 0bama on Jay Leno in the first place, why is he traveling around the country like the campaign is still going on, and why is he so addicted to a teleprompter even for the briefest of comments. What happened to the great orator the media has proclaimed him to be?

David, I'm rather suprised this received any more or less news coverage from you that someone who has as much right as any parent with a special needs child would find this offensive. Like her or not, your digging in the wrong direction with much of the public when you try to put her opinion on such a matter she SHOULD have taken offense too on a pedalstool. Whether it took 1 day or 20, her concern over this I would think would be the same. It really comes across as nothing moe than deflecting from what was an insanely stupid and insensitive thing to say as a president. Maybe your the one who needs to rethink your position. She lost, can't you get comfortable with the fact that she is an American with opinions that count just as much as yours. Personally I don't care for her, but you come acorss no differently than Obama on this matter. Sometimes apologies don't repair the damge causes immediately as you elude it should have done by his quick reaction. You need to be a little more concerned with those who the comments concerned and offended rather than trying to defend and deflect for Obama. He's a big boy now, let him stand on the merit of his own words.

Remeber Obama and the Don Imus Comment:
Obama said: “He fed into some of the worst stereotypes that my two young daughters are having to deal with today in America. The notions that as young African-American women — who I hope will be athletes — that that somehow makes them less beautiful or less important. It was a degrading comment. It’s one that I’m not interested in supporting.”
Therefore, laughter and the lack of reaction from Obama’s remarks suggest Americans have a set a rules for race, class and gender: If you touch them you will pay.
And another set of rules for individuals that have a mental or physical disability: If you touch them, it’s ok if you apologize. Oh, and by the way, it’s okay to laugh at the jokes that come at the expense of the latter.
It is just cruel:
