I don't recall anyone promising me free medical care for life when I enlisted. The VA should not be covering non-service connected illnesses and injuries. Also, they should cover service connected issue without complaint. I see an un-crossable line here. I am not a liberal. I was proud to do my duty (twice) and I do not expect a hand-out from the government, actually my 2 enlistments made me want to stay far away from them. But, if I was injured or sick due to something that happened while I was on active duty I would expect the VA to help me out.

Well, obviously you are very young, in perfect health, and plan to stay that way forever. Let me tell you something...life throws you curve balls! My husband was the same way once. He has spent the last 15 years in the Marine Corps and is about to be medically retired. He has several horrible things wrong with him now that all started while in the Corps and his life, our lives, will never be the same. So forgive me if I don't quite share your views of Veteran's not deserving full benefits. You possibly should give that more thought. We do agree on one issue though. Obama's plan was the most ignorant one ever! I don't think the man has two brain cells to rub together.

Dear Alex2 - I couldn't agree with you more!! You, as well as all veterans have risked your lives to serve our country and to preserve my very freedom. Actually, I am a Democrat and I voted for President Obama. If this is true and our new administration is in the planning stages of cutting benefits of our veterans I (and many others who voted for him) will be outraged! Creating healthcare benefits for the millions who are without and preserving those who already have benefits was supposed to be a basis of what President Obama claimed and still claims to do. Cutting benefits to anyone with legitimate need (especially veterans) is not what we were told during the campaigne. This is not the philosophy of any Democrat...the able bodied are commanded by God to help thy fellow man who are not able. I am willing to endure higher taxes in order to pay my debt for my freedom. Veterans and current soldiers are a group in which President Obama promised to protect. He should follow through if he wants a 2nd term vote from me.

If a private insurance company has to pay for the service-related injury and/or disability care for a veteran, do you really think they would just eat the cost themselves? No, they are going to charge more on subscription payments and more on premiums. They are still a business and the cost will get passed onto the vets for injuries sustained under government orders.

Why? Or, more accurately, why veterans as opposed to anyone else? Why is it apparently immoral for veterans to be denied "free, government-provided health care" but not immoral for it to be denied to the tens of millions who lack affordable health care now, including millions of children?

Larry E they are talking about veterans who are service disabled--so they were injured in the line of duty while serving OUR country. They should receive the health care they get and more, they are what makes America great. As for all the uninsured Americans I really don't have much sympathy for most because even the most uneducated (as long as they have a GED) can join the military and get health care. The bottom line is most are to lazy or they think they are 'too good' for the military. Let me guess you are writing this post from your living room complaining about the 'rich' to....

Obama said we have to make responsible decisions in regards to cutting the budget. Well, I guess he means we should start with injured veterans --of course how brilliant! He is also proposing that active duty military pay a 10% fee on medical services they receive...what great change! I’m so glad he put over 600 BILLION toward uninsured Americans while he steps all over injured veterans and their families..

Greg, that isn't the point of this bill. See my comment above. This bill removes care for injuries caused (directly or indirectly) by this government.

As a serving military member, I will comment that Veteran's do not deserve full medical care. What Obama's proposal specifically does is remove full compensation for costs of health care for injuries and conditions sustained in service to this country. THAT IS THE WORST THING I'VE EVER HEARD PROPOSED.
Should the government pay for a broken leg sustained by a veteran 20 years after service? maybe not.
Should the government pay for treatment of a disability sustained while following government orders in service of this country? Absolutely! And that is what this threatens to remove.
