Car #2 is obviously in very bad shape or driven poorly if it burns almost twice as much fuel per mile. Doing burnouts at every start? Going 90 MPH? This eats more road.

Lawn mower man- thats a stretch, he's getting artifically cheap fuel because he's using road fuels distribution network, not special lawnmower fuel. I suppose he could be treated the same was as boats and tractors are now for taxes.

And yes there is a beneficial side effect of encouraging conservation of a limited resource. No problem there. Does this mean that it doesn't pay for road maintenance? Of course not.

We really should be taxing gas the same way we tax other purchases, as a percentage of the purchase price rather than a fixed fee per gallon. This mitigates the loss of purchasing power because of inflation.

Whats the problem that we're supposedly trying to rectify?

I'd like to see an in depth story on who's really behind this push to replace the gas tax.

Car #1 weighs 3,000lb and gets 35mpg

Car #2 weights 3,000lb and gets 20mpg

The owner of car #2 pays 75% more per mile for the same wear and tear.

Person #3 mows lawns for a living on a riding mower. The riding mower gives -0- wear and tear to the roads, but Person #3 is paying for the roads by using his riding mower.

There is no issue with taxing gasoline as a green tax. Just say so, rather than claiming it's to fund road maintenance.

Its a matter of funding roads with taxes appropriate to the wear and tear. Heavy vehicle do more damage and pay more gas tax. Whats the problem that we're supposedly trying to rectify?

I'd like to see an in depth story on who's really behind this push to replace the gas tax.
