Newt’s Big Ideas

As long as Republicans are citing (and regularly talking to) former GOP House Speaker Newt Gingrich as the role model for their comeback, it’s worth scanning the endless river of proposals and “American Solutions” that come out of his office. The latest batch:

• Abolishing the capital gains tax and the estate tax.

Cutting the corporate income tax from 35 percent to 12.5 percent.

• A temporary, 50 percent payroll tax cut.

• A tax credit for “responsible home buyers,” as opposed to the reckless ones aided by Barack Obama’s plans.

In addition, Gingrich proposes new energy exploration, a “new, expanded electric power grid and a 21st century air traffic control system.” The only spending cut I see is “eliminating Congressional earmarks,” and without doing the math I can already say that this package would absolutely explode the deficit.

Mr. Weigel,

Having passed welfare reform and balanced the budget for four years and paid off $405 billion in federal debt, Speaker Gingrich's credentials on fiscal discipline are matched by very few.

A key part of balancing the budget in the 90s was maintaining vigorous economic growth. The 12 American Solutions for Jobs and Prosperity are essential to that end. Still, more must be done.

At American Solutions and the Center for Health Transformation, we are confident we can find big ways to balance the federal budget. For instance, the Center is working on anti-fraud efforts worth at least $100 billion a year. American Solutions will release a path to a balanced budget later on this summer.
