well, i recently reead a article in FHM where it was presented how are the U.S so called soldiers - even they are hired they are still US citizens - how are they killing their time in the "hot places", and i must admit that only if 20 % of that article was true, than we really have a problem ! accident attorney brooklyn

We don't want military benefits - the statement was made in the article that "employees are not subject to the rigors of Army basic training". Well, that's just silly. Why would they have to undergo Army training, if they aren't performing in that capacity and not receiving the benefits that come with serving? Believe me, I don't feel that I'm owed any of that stuff. But why even put that in the article?

And you're right, jsmolen, I do take it personally - probably the same way a priest would feel offended if someone said to him, "All priests are child molesters", or the way a Muslim might feel if someone else said to him, "All Muslims are terrorists". Never did I disagree that it is a terrible thing for that soldier to lose his life in such a way (or in any way, for that matter). I was just trying to point out that stereotyping and spreading erroneous information is also wrong. To make a blanket statement that all contractors are mercenaries, like contractorsrmercs, is ignorant, to say the least.

And where do people get the information on which to base their opinions? Generally from the media. If we are going to hold contractors responsible for performing their jobs adequately, shouldn't we also hold the media responsible for publishing facts? For instance, saying that KBR sent an unarmed convoy out on the roads - we do all realize that it's a military function to provide the gun support, right? Not to point the finger - just stating the facts.

Just one more thing: KBR doesn't wear uniforms, and they don't get any clothing for free. So you don't have to feel mad about that anymore.

Geesh monster15, you don't need to take this so personally. I am a servicemember, and have been to Iraq. no one is trying to tell you that you, all 100 pounds of you, are a bad guy. who knows and frankly, who cares. the important thing is that my colleagues and myself are there to do a job (as you maybe have been too though you don't say, you only imply). If someone makes it out of a war zone he or she should be able to go home and move on with life. it takes enough work to get back on track after these sacrifices. Dying through electricution while you're over there, especially when KBR and others are pocketing piles of dollars, and when the danger of the electrocution is not a secret or previously unknown, is complete BS and is UNACCEPTABLE. If this administration is going to bring on all these contractors/mercenaries/as you wish, for the sake of funneling money to their cronies, while Soldiers are serving, reporting the danger problems, and then dying anyway, I wager to say the administration has messed with the wrong chick. I came back 2 yrs ago (thank God) and now my boyfriend is there. for him to die of electrocution in the shower, while he is serving a tour overseas, is not an option. nor is it OK for any of the other SM's or contractors! I can't imagine that you would really disagree with that perspective... Quit defending the CiC and KBR, pull your head out, and let's deal with reality. The time has passed for these things needing to change.

p.s. - of course contractors don't get GI Bill. they're not GI's (though some were previously.) if contractors want military benefits they need to sign on the line for Uncle Sam. you all know what the terms of your contracts are before you agree to go: lots of $, no weapon (officially), mid-tour trips to visit family at home, free uniforms (which is total crap if you ask me), and no one ensuring they are getting protection from the top, nor that they are all doing the right thing. you're a little late to try to negotiate for military benefits now.

I will repeat it: KBR personnel fall under the Uniform Code of Military Justice, Military Extraterritorial Jurisdiction Act, and the General Order #1. If they break the rules, they can be punished according to military law.

I can't speak for other contractors, but this article is about KBR employees. They are not allowed to carry weapons. Period. Not even the Security team. In fact, if they are found with weapons, they get fired. I myself have never even touched a gun. Oh yeah - I'm a contractor. All 5 feet, 100 pounds of me. Pretty tough and scary, huh?

why are all you people calling them contractors, call them for what they are Mercenaries. I am so sick of hearing the media and the everyone else in our country calling them "contractors" that i am starting to pull my hair out. Call them for what they are hired guns.

They are the ones that are causing us all the problems in Iraq with the civilians over they, because of the fact that they "do" operate with total and complete imunity from the law. I can actually walk right up to anyone they want and shoot them in the head and not a thing would happen over there. (Exactly that situation did happen and the person they killed was Iraq's VP's body guard.) So if they can do that and nothing happens to them how do you think that reflects on our country to the people of Iraq.

I strongly recommend that people read " BlackWater" the rise of the worls most powerful mercenary army. Also does it suprise anyone that the company is run by one crazy evangelical nuts that have dominated our country since the treasonous administration has taken office.

Monster15
Then why are there no military investigations to the numerous capital crimes committed by contractors? Seems the State Dept is making half-hearted swipes at a few, FBI for the outrage by Blackwater, but I no JAG or courts martial. They are not under military code, not policed by the military either. I think the large amount of gang rapes and kidnappings ARE because it is well known they are outside the law in Iraq.
If they would publicize how cost ineffective these GOP militias really are, they would fire all of them and put the system back within the military.

Excellent well documented article that enlightens the reader re: facts in the case and the legal issues that make it so difficult to endict KBR and provide compensation to those injured. these type of articles should provide incentives to the legal community to fight the injustice resulting from the blanket immunity provided to contractors. You are in a combat zone exposed to the dangers posed by the enemy but you don't have to be a victim of carelesness and ineptitude.Bravo!
