Even Lawyers Get the Layoff Ax, Proving No One’s Immune

In a sign of the reach and depth of this financial crisis, even lawyers are getting the layoff ax. The Wall Street Journal’s law blog wrote that Thursday was possibly “the darkest day ever” for big law firms, and it tallied up the damage.
The day’s wreckage:
DLA Piper announced it was laying off 80 lawyers and 100 staff members in the U.S. Goodwin Procter announced it was cutting 36 lawyers and 38 staff. Dechert cut 19 lawyers. Faegre & Benson (yesterday) axed 29 lawyers.
the end of the day, Holland & Knight had fired 70 lawyers and 173 staff. The Journal said the Above the Law blog will keep a running tally of layoffs.
Just a little more evidence that high-paying, white collar jobs aren’t safe anymore.
