Republican Policy Committee Attacks Stimulus for Creating Jobs
Wednesday, February 04, 2009 at 5:10 pm
Really! The Republican Policy Committee in the Senate is distributing a two-page fact sheet on the stimulus called “Democrats’ Partisan $1.2 Trillion Spending Bill by the Numbers.” Among the abuses:
10,000: Jobs created at NASA at a cost to taxpayers of $1.5 billion under the Senate bill
The point, of course is that $1.5 billion is a lot of money for 10,000 theoretical jobs. And it’s such a powerful point for the RPC that the number is listed again at the end of the fact sheet, as another abuse:
$1,502,000,000 Spent at NASA to hire 10,000 people in Senate bill
That’s a lot of anger at a line in the bill that actually creates jobs.

Isn't the fact that the bill spends $1.5 billion to create 10,000 jobs at 150,000 per person… a remarkable waste of money? I think the problem is with how few jobs $1.5 billion creates.

Well, presumably the money would also be used to buy some rockets and stuff.

As noted by Revisited, it's also buying really expensive stuff. I assume the money is for funding certain projects, which involves hiring the people and also buying the probably-unique satellites and sensors and rockets, which tend to be rather pricey.
As an example, albeit from a different field of science, in the neurobiology lab I work in, we have some neural interface systems that cost about $100,000 each. (I had to Fed Ex one back to the manufacturer a while ago. Talk about stressful.)
Also, rocket scientists are more expensive than ditch diggers.

I assume this is also not just for one year. Often times for NASA money that I have seen, it is applied in contracts that last over multiple years. To add to what others are saying, think about going to your mechanic or build a house. You pay for labor and parts, not just labor.
What really surprises me about this is you don't normally see resistance like this from Republicans since many of the centers are in Republican or Republican friendly states (Texas, Florida for instance). But what probably will happen is the money will be removed and then in a few years they'll lament why we're “losing ground” to other countries in high tech fields or why program are delayed.
