CIA Algeria Station Chief Accused of Raping At Least Two Women

Really too disgusting for words: ABC reports that two women have come forward to accuse the CIA’s Algeria station chief of drugging and raping them. (Via TPMmuckraker.)

The Justice Department has an investigation open on this guy, and he’s innocent until proven guilty and all, but it’s extremely hard to imagine two Muslim women living in a country where rape carries such an awful social stigma making a frivolous accusation. CIA Director-designate Leon Panetta will have a ton of work to do.

You know, there's a huge difference between “innocent until proven guilty” and “innocent until proven guilty and all.” Since you obviously aren't giving accused the presumption of innocence, for reasons detailed in the very same sentence, why bother to pretend that you are?

Why are we hearing this?
Who gains?

News of the claims comes at an awkward time for incoming President Obama, who has repeatedly emphasized his desire to improve America's image in Muslim countries.
