What is your position on comments, really attacks, made by David Letterman against Sarah Palin and her family? Before I sign up with my friends we need to know if you stand for character and decency in your organization and do not resort to low tactics to spread your beliefs. We are indepenent minded and don't necessarily agree with many of Palins views, but this behavior is devolving us as a people. I have not seen your response to this, perhaps I missed it.
Thank you - Christine Perry

I'm starting to come around to your way of thinking on this one, Cass. This was Obama's way of publicly bending over backwards to give the Republicans what they said they wanted. When zero Republicans voted for the stimulus, regardless, the GOP looked like a bunch of partisan obstructionists. Or so the theory goes. I'm not sure it worked, or how we'd even know whether it worked. And it sucks that Planned Parenthood was expected to take one for the team.

Here's that follow-up blog post I mentioned earlier.

Yes, Planned Parenthood is understandably pissed off at Obama today, but I think they're smarting from the symbolic dis more than the substantive setback. It was a pretty harsh dis. But I haven't seen any other national women's organizations going out of their way to publicly stand in solidarity with PP on this one. I think it's because the women's lobby is pretty damned pleased with the way the stimulus turned out.

One advantage of Obama's bipartisan posturing is that now he can argue that he tried to reach out but the Republicans were obstinate. ABC and CBS are already saying that, and the Democrats will be able to use that for the midterm if the stimulus succeeds. If the birth control provision passes next week, then Obama will have gained political capital at the net cost of one week's delay in birth control.
