The Bush administration has confirmed my skepticism about carbon capture and storage plants opening anytime soon. Last week, Energy Secretary Samuel Bodman announced that the Bush administration is pulling its support for FutureGen, the federal government’s project to launch a carbon capture plant.

The reason, unsurprisingly, is money. It looks like the project would cost around $1.8 billion, which is twice as much as the feds expected. The FutureGen alliance will take its case to Congress, but I wouldn’t hold my breath.
