I attribute the high price of fuel over the past year and a half to two year as a contributing factor in bringing down the economy. If the price of fuel goes up, everyone down the supply chain feels it.

One note that I should have included. Many gas-tax proponents are proposing that the money be returned to consumers elsewhere -- with a payroll tax rebate, for example. That way the increased charge at the pump, while still encouraging drivers to buy more fuel-efficient cars, wouldn't hurt folks already suffering from the recession. In this sense, the gas tax is much more an energy strategy then it is a tax-revenue policy.

It's interesting to note that in England, the tax on gasoline is many, many times higher and they drive very efficient cars, comparably. This is obviously aside from the fact that taking more money out of the pocket of Americans probably isn't a good idea right now. I attribute the high price of fuel over the past year and a half to two year as a contributing factor in bringing down the economy. If the price of fuel goes up, everyone down the supply chain feels it.

I don't know about this - but a great article nonetheless. More taxes right now with the economy as it is wouldn't be easy for many to swallow.
