To imply that workers do not deserve a decent wage (lowering the cost of labor) is dehumanizing. People deserve decent wages to support their families and educate their children. What needs to be done with unions is reform and oversight, because like with anything that acquires too much power, it becomes corrupt; it is the natural progression of things that has been proven time and again throughout history. To let the automakers just completely fail would require a lot of government help for the people who will be losing their jobs, and as we have seen with the home foreclosure crisis and bank bailouts, the government is reluctant to give the people free lunch, instead they give it to the corporations and businesses and by the time it trickles down throught the business executives to the worker there is not much left. <br>Social Darwinism may be the status quo, but that does not make it ethical or moral. Food has to be put on the table, the heat has to stay on, and kids must be properly clothed or people will start rioting in Detroit and burn it all down again.

The big three American automakers had their time to do what was needed in the American market place. To retool and make cars that the American people want to buy, but did not when the time was right. Why are the same people who CHOSE not to buy their cars and support their business. Now the ones they seek money from the American tax payers should have to vote on the auto industry bail out not our government representatives who are receiving campaign funds from the companies in question. Even offering discounts to Americans by their social security number to buy an American made car is a waste of our money. That still rewards them for not keeping up with the public needs. The big three need to be left alone and let fail so they can come out of bankruptcy stronger and free of all those pensions and other insane costs that they currently pay. On news radio 970 wfla they said 55% of fords profits go to pay pensions for people who no longer work there. Also the automakers would be wise to pick up and move to a state that is a "right to work state" and get out of those unions here in Florida there are plenty of people who would jump at the chance to make even half of what the union labors are paid. Unions were good at first but then they got to much power and started demanding to much from the companies. Lower the cost of labor and get rid of the pensions then get back to what Henry Ford started with an affordable car for every one.
