In my opinion, Safeguard Properties is the WORST property preservation company in the world. They are a middle man that hires subcontractors to do all their work, that receive very little training and there is virtually ZERO quality control. The properties that I deal with everyday are ones that have been previously "winterized" by Safeguard, however in 50% of the cases the winterization was not done property and in the majority of those cases severe damage to the home's plumbing system has occured. Further, the subcontractors that Safeguard uses often steal the air conditioner compressors, plumbing and take valuables out of the home which the previous owners still have a legal right to claim. This theft isn't a once in a while thing this is pretty much all the time, from my observations. Safeguard is loosing their contract with Fannie Mae because of this. I only hope that other banks follow suit and stop using this unprofessional company.

Not to be insensitive or anything like that, especially since I recently purchased a home (legally, with income verification, and a fixed rate throughout), but doesn't this report state that he sent his wife and kids BACK to their native El Salvador? What does THAT tell you?

I just wanted to comment that anybody who gets a loan is living above his or her means. The rule of thumb is if one can't buy it in cash then they can't afford it. I don't think people shoould bash those who have had their homes foreclosed on. I would also like to remind every one that a lot of people benifited from the buyers when they bought high! A lot of your houses gained hundreds of thousands of dollars! My compassion goes out to all who are loosing there homes and jobs. My words of encouragement are- loss is the first step toward learning.

How ignorant and uninformed.

The financiers and mortgage-makers allowed this homeowner and other like him to "buy" the house. No, they didn't "allow" him, they actually encouraged him. The money was in bundling mortgages and reselling them, so the objective became: Write as many mortgages as possible. No money down? What sort of responsible financial institution would offer that? They didn't care--because they were getting their cut then passing on the risk to some other chump.

So who gets bailed out? The financial masters of greed?
And who gets kicked out? The poor chump who saw his mortgage payments rise from $1400 to $2600. Everything he invested in the place is gone. He's homeless, and his family had to leave.

And it's happening time after time after time.

While the fat cats get bailed out and STILL get "bonuses".

Something is seriously wrong with this picture--it's unfortunate you can't see it.

Very well-reported and presented.

This may be the most poorly written story I have ever read.

It's an article meant to sway your emotions and avoid facts....

1) The "reporter" (nee activist) does not ask Julio how much he put down. Is it really "his house"?
2) Julio was not asked how he qualified for the loan... did he lie on the application??
3) Did the reporter ask Julio if he can read?
4) Did the reporter ask Julio if he has been living free in this house for the past 5 months?
5) Did the reporter ask Julio why he can afford the rent on an apartment but chose to buy a home?

6) DIid the reporter interview someone that is trying to actually purchase an affordable house but can't because fools like Julio inflated the market.

The answer is NO... This is not a reporter. A real reporter reports facts and knows that anecdotal stories can not get to the true nature of a problem.

Solution... all fools that purchased houses that they can not afford should lose them.

The prices will go down and people with buy the houses at a cost they can afford.

The economy will suffer but in the end will be healthier.

A solution to Julio's problems would be for him to go live with Mary Kane and she can support him.
