<p>Seeking to quell a growing storm about <a title="controversial comments" href="http://thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/03/13/the-wright-controversy/" id="gs_2">controversial comments</a> by the pastor of his church, Rev. Jeremiah Wright, Barack Obama has issued a statement.<br /><br />
It’s worth looking at the whole thing, available for your reading pleasure on <a title="Huffington Post" href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/barack-obama/on-my-faith-and-my-church_b_91623.html?view=print" id="bwcb">Huffington Post</a>, but this bit stands out:<br />
<blockquote>Most importantly, Rev. Wright preached the gospel of Jesus, a gospel on which I base my life. In other words, he has never been my political advisor; he’s been my pastor. And the sermons I heard him preach always related to our obligation to love God and one another, to work on behalf of the poor, and to seek justice at every turn. </blockquote>
<p>Will it be enough?</p>

If it isn’t enough, then the country is doomed. Why? Because we separate reason, understanding, fairness, intellectual honesty and tolerance from our politics. A decent society can’t be sustained by politics that are dominated by the darkest influences in human nature. It doesn’t have to be a dramatic death. It could just as well be a slow, insidious one. Dead is dead whatever the cause.
