Happy Toilet Day!

I know you’ve all been sitting on your hands for the past 364 days in anticipation of this glorious holiday. But wait no longer — today is World Toilet Day!

So give your steadfast porcelain friend a hug and a kiss, and remember the World Toilet Organization’s “3 WE’s:”

- On behalf of toilets: WE DESERVE BETTER SOCIAL STATUS.

- On behalf of toilet cleaners: WE DESERVE BETTER PAY, RESPECT AND PROSPECTS.

- On behalf of 2.5 billion toilet-less people: WE DESERVE BETTER PLACES TO DEFECATE.

With that in mind (and take heed!), let me leave you with the immortal words of Milan Kundera that I happened to read over breakfast this morning:

“Toilets in modern water closets rise up from the floor like white water lilies. … Even though the sewer pipelines reach far into our houses with their tentacles, they are carefully hidden from view, and we are happily ignorant of the invisible Venice of shit underlying our bathrooms, bedrooms, dance halls, and parliaments.”

May World Toilet Day purge us of our ignorance and give us pause to contemplate what we far too often choose not to think about.

I remember celebrating World Toilet Day as young lad…first when I was in a very intense and protracted period of potty-training, then as a mischievous adolescent, and finally as an adult in the real world, charged with diagnosing and fixing my own troublesome toilet. I will make sure to give it a kiss for its special day.

This is precisely the kind of news I look for from the Washington Independent. Thank you, TWI, for sharing the beauty and joy of this important day with the rest of the national community!
