Dean to Bloggers: ‘The Next State on My List is Texas’

Not-for-much-longer DNC Chairman Howard Dean just held a conference call with America’s bloggers — or, as Gov. Sarah Palin would have it, “kids in pajamas sitting in the basement of their parents’ homes.” Over the rumble of the washing machine, I asked him about the successes and failures of his famous 50-state strategy, credited with helping Sen. Barack Obama turn some red states blue. The strategy didn’t seem to work in much of Appalachia and the Inland South (see maps below, via The New York Times), where Democrats did better in 2000 and 2004.

Dean saw the glass as about 9/10 full.

“Clearly we would prefer to do better in the Appalachian regions, but to win in Florida, to win in North Carolina and to win in the West is huge,” he said. “The next state on my list is Texas.”

Oh, right, those maps I promised you:

Dean's being reasonable about Texas, and about going after Appalachia and the inland South. What happens in 2012 if Obama seeks reelection and more whites have gotten comfortable with the notion of a black president? In fact, what happens in 2010 if Democrats are seen as having gotten things done, especially dealing with the economy? Waves tend not to go three elections, but other than that, Republicans have little to hope for other than the Democrats fail, while Democrats have to succeed, and hope Republicans still can't figure out what's gone wrong.
