How can we arrange a diplomatic exit plan when there is no national government there? We pretend that Maliki is the national government, but he's our puppet. Talking with regional powers makes better sense, but within Iraq, there is chaos already. We're bombing Baghdad again, for crying out loud! For the past five years, we've heard variations on "we can't leave until we can make sure Iraq will be stable after we do". I'd like to think a new administration could make a difference, but mud is mud, and quagmire remains quagmire no matter who's in the White House.

Statesmanship is right. Unfortunately, this conflict is distinguished by a complete lack of statesmanship on our part (regionally and globally). Where is the State Department? So called "nation-building" in Iraq has been a commedy of errors. The military is not the right tool for post-conflict accommodations. And, given our official stance of not talking with many of the players in the region, what can we bring to this important effort?

With the administration in charge, count on many more fumbles and increasing quagmire.
