Fossil Fools Day

Eight people have been arrested after participating in "Fossil Fools Day" demonstrations today, according to the environmental advocacy group Rising Tide North America. Participants tied themselves to bulldozers early this morning to shut down construction of the Duke Energy Cliffside coal plant, 50 miles west of Charlotte. When police arrived, "Global Warming Crime Scene" tape blocked off the construction site. Police officers used tasers to force the protesters to separate themselves from the bulldozers.
This is one of several demonstrations, protests, and theatrical antics slated to take place all over the world today as part of the International Rising Tide network’s Fossil Fools Day of Action, meant to protest the fossil fuels industry. Proposed demonstrations include: acts of civil disobedience at energy companies, mass account closures at Bank of America, group bike rides and green job rallies.
Several demonstrations have already taken place in the UK, including polar bear protests at London’s Porsche dealership, a work stoppage at an open-cast coal mine in Norfolk and a blockade at a major gas terminal in Wales.
I’m not sure any of these acts really qualify as pranks, though. These guys should take cues from The Yes Men for pulling off corporate shenanigans.

I guess the point to express this was back during the "don’t tase me bro" saga, but it seems that Tasers have become the one size fits all solution to dealing with any refusal to cooperate with police. On the one hand it seems reasonable that a police officer would want to avoid potential injury, but they had to have understood that their jobs came with that risk. The people performing these acts of protest also probably understand that there is a potential for bodily harm involved. However, tasering has been shown to be deadly at worst, and borders on torture at best. It seems to me the use of Tasers should be restricted to situations that would have previously warranted use of a firearm, and each use of a Taser should be accompanied by an investigation that accompanies the discharge of a gun.
