Further Proof Alaska Is Not Like the Rest of America

With 99 percent of the precincts reporting, Sen. Ted Stevens (R-AK) leads his Democratic challenger, Anchorage Mayor Mark Begich, by more than 3,000 votes.
Apparently, in Alaska, a conviction on seven felony corruption charges less than two weeks before an election does not necessarily spell the end of your political career.

Alaska is fundamentally “off-the-grid.” A lot of people who move there want no part of any responsibility towards a community of others. There is a western frontier distrust of civilization's demands and the need to answer to anyone. Thus, a politician who broke the law could be hailed with “Hell, Yeah!” support for not conforming to the expectations of those far away people who are more community responsible and therefore suspect.
This also indicates that if Palin is to have any future beyond Alaska, she will have to work very hard to overcome very steep learning curves and to transcend the frontier fundamentalism that bred her. This won't happen soon. I'd expect her to wind up on the tent circuit as an evangelist, alhough it is possible she could wind up with an Alaska congressional or senatorial seat.

Just a thought here..if Stevens is expelled from the Senate as Senator Reid has suggested can Sarah the Magnificent appoint herself to replace him?

We like crime. We have historically been a refuge for crooks, scum, and scoundrels. Soapy Smith is our patron saint. Chilkoot Charlie's has a sign on the outside: We cheat the other guy and pass the savings on to you! Cut throats and pickpockets and claim jumpers, monopolists and poachers, belly snagging fishermen and roe strippers to the last. Ted and Don bring home the bacon, Lisa is just not doing the job and was only offered a sweetheart deal on Kenai riverfront property. If she doesn't enhance her crookedness she could be looking at Sarah Palin or Todd gunning for her seat.
