Time for self styled conservatives to look at reality. Volker was always too real to be put into the silly conservative cubby hole.

I think putting a critic in the position is exactly what Obama needed to do. The "advisor" mode is not to be the "yes man". Someone who can smell problems is who we need at the president's side.

I was a money market dealer during the time that Volcker was the fed chairman. He has the unquestioned ability to do what needs to be done, whatever that may be and the absolute confidence of the markets. To see him seated next to Obama indicates that the next president is serious about solving the economic crisis we face and solving the problem at its heart - Wall Street.

Conservatism is the brand name of a religion in which two opposite states can be true at the same time. It has little or nothing to do with philosophy and rejects reason, as reasoning and being reasonable are Liberal traits. For conservatives, Liberalism is Fascism. Simply pretend words do not have meanings beyond as pejoratives from the brain injured. Obama is a Muslim who attends to a bad Christian church. Obama is the most liberal senator in the Senate despite the best efforts of Independent Socialist Bernie Sanders. Progressive Taxation is socialism even though every conservative has more or less avoided abolishing it. The CRA was bad, but Bush II's "Ownership Society" was not. Redistribution of wealth is bad except when taxpayer dollars are sent to industrial farmers, failed Wall Street firms, and to oil companies who struggle under the burdens of record profitability.

Volcker a Burkean? I suppose so. But Volcker is also a Democrat. Democrats tend Burkean--they are the most conservative of all of the "left" parties in developed jurisdictions.
btw, Burke's opposition to Irish independence was probably because it would be a Herrenvolk independence, with the Irish Protestants on top. Burke's reputation for conservatism is based on his opposition to the French revolution.

Excellent point JSS. Why can't 'Liberal' be fiscally responsible. In fact recent history shows that they are. Its time for some new labels.

It would be helpful if writers like you would stop the silly use of "conservative". Since the term has been so broadly used it is meaningless. It has certainly not been in practice what they like to call themselves. It was Reagan who first ran up the deficit and enlarged the government followed by Bush 1 and 2. It was Clinton who decreased the size of both.
Time for self styled conservatives to look at reality. Volker was always too real to be put into the silly conservative cubby hole.
