Minnesota Republican Backs Off Call for Probe of “Anti-American” Congressmen

Minnesota Republican congresswoman Michelle Bachmann stirred up a media storm Friday when she told MSNBC’s “Hardball With Chris Mathews” that “the news media should do a penetrating expose and take a look — I wish they would — take a great look at the views of people in Congress and find out [if] they [are] pro-America or anti-America.”

Today, a spokesman for Bachmann had no suggestions as to which questions reporters should ask lawmakers to determine if they are pro- or anti-American. “You guys know what kinds of questions to ask,” Bachmann’s spokeswoman, Michelle Marsten, said in a phone interview Monday. “It’s not for us to decide.”

Asked which members of Congress the media should interview, Marsten said her boss had “no one in mind.”

Bachmann’s call for an inquiry into the patriotism of members of Congress, which spread rapidly in the liberal blogosphere, helped her opponent, Elwyn Tinklenberg, to raise more than $650,000 over the weekend. A Democratic poll released last week showed Tinklenberg trailing Bachmann by just four percentage points, 42-38, in a race that until recently was considered safe for the incumbent.

Bachmann told a local TV station this morning that her remarks had been “misread.” While she has enjoyed a high-profile run as Republican spokesman in the fall campaign, her remarks on “Hardball” is the latest gaffe in a series of controversial statements that have marked her tenure in Congress.

How about an investigation into the various meds bachmann may have taken prior to making those remarks? Is she kidding? What a disgrace! How does the state that produced the great Paul Wellstone produce an atrocity like this?? Dumbfounding. She must be censured and voted out of office immediately.

Don't forget, this is the same whack job seen on CSPAN blaming the current financial crisis on mortgages granted to black people. Boy, if I lived in her district in Minnesota I would be doing more than contributing $ to her opponent (which I did). I would be gathering every one I know that is registered and storming the voting booth to stop this Josephine McCarthy.

To think that Michele Bachmann is anything but a neo-con is ridiculous.Calling the Presidential nominee as a 'Anti-American'!!!! Its shameful and beyond dangerous. The problem is that she has a voice in the U.S. Congress and is a glib politician who can get away with anything she says. This is about pulling the country together and re-building America. If she cannot control her mouth and if she thinks she can get away with anything – she is dead wrong. She needs to be censured and she needs to be defeated. She is a disgrace to America and Americans. She scares me. God help us!

What a bloody moron. Finally the American people are getting together and not putting up with this garbage. I much prefer democracy to fascism. Viva la Tinklenberg!!! I wonder if she is smart enough to be embarrassed by this.

Michelle Bachmann is the new Joe McCarthy, calling for an investigation of “anti-American” sentiment among liberals. This is insane. The Republican ticket is out of control. They are trying to fright people into voting for them. These tactics will cause terrible harm to this country and probably some innocent person who try doesn't agree with their agenda.

We always blame Congress and Washington for perpetually being divided along party lines. Obviously, the hate or ignorance that breeds this division has roots elsewhere. It appears that some of those small towns, often referred to as the “real America,” are rich ground for this type of un-American thought process. Dislike of the current Administration, for its lack of respect to the Constitution, its disregard of civil rights, supporting torture, and the rebirth of an Imperial Presidency that is closed to scrutiny or criticism amongst other things does not mean you are either a liberal nor anti-American. Quite the opposite, it is every citizen's responsibility to question their government, their actions and motives. This is what a democracy is all about. Unfortunately, this is something Ms. Bachmann fails to understand.
