Technically, it was reading your column every day, Laura, which lead me to 'just a girl from homer' and I thank you both for all your useful information :)

Hi - I'm an outsider who's been very confused about things Sarah Palin says and have googled so much about your state it now feels like a second home. I've been reading your letters for a week now and I have a couple of questions regarding Sarah and the rape kits.

According to the Alaska Disaster Center http://www.disastercenter.com/alaska/crime/35.htm Wasilla has an average of 3 reported rapes per year. How can that possibly equate to the claim that Wasilla spends between $5,000 and $14,000 per year on said kits? And if there are dozens more rape incidents that aren't in these posted, public statistics, how many rape kits do you get for $14,000?

And why on earth do they cost so much to begin with? Some sterile plastic evidence bags (pre-labelled glorified ziplocks actually) some rather routine lab tests and medications including one morning after pill. Add a doctor's exam in the emergency room and maybe, 'maybe' an overnight stay in the hospital - What are the actual costs to the state? Exactly 'what' makes this procedure so expensive?

I'm just shocked, having walked in those shoes myself, how any sane person could bill the victim to begin with - but now, I find myself entertaining the notion that these poor women 'might' have been price-gouged by a sister...

It's all striking me very much like the line from "Independence Day" when Bill Pullman says "where did we get the money for this facility?" and Judd Hirsch replies "Mr. President - do you really think it costs the government $10,000 for a hammer?"

From where does Sarah get her figures?
