When the senator says that “it would be easier politically for me to have joined Senator Webb in offering his legislation,” doesn't he have a point? It would have been easy to join the crowd (75 for), but McCain has never been one to follow along.

You can seize on the idea that he “skipped the vote” but doesn't his reasoned explanation about why he doesn't support the bill sort of diffuse the idea that he is “fearful?” You don't draw attention to yourself, in the form of a blocky, seven graf statement, if you are “fearful.”

It's nice that Mr. Lillis took the time to dig up Sen. McCain's comment about why he opposes the Webb GI Bill (which I support).

But I'm also a Gulf War veteran who left the Marine Corps, as an NCO, to go to college under the old GI bill. In other words, I'm a case in point for Sen. McCain's argument. The Marine Corps spent a fine chunk of change to train me to become an instrument of war. After I got a little taste, however, I decided I'd rather go to college and learn a little something.

I like the part where Sen. McCain says “Unlike Senator Obama, my admiration, respect and deep gratitude for America's veterans is something more than a convenient campaign pledge. I think I have earned the right to make that claim.”

Another zinger: “I will not accept from Senator Obama, who did not feel it was his responsibility to serve our country in uniform, any lectures on my regard for those who did.”

BTW, who told you McCain was “fearful?” Is that something you made up on your own? I guess that's the beauty of blogging.
