Florida state senator asks county to take a stand on controversial landfill

This morning, the Pasco County Board of Commissioners met to discuss the landfill application of Angelo’s Aggregates — a controversialproposal that was denied in the past and could damage environmentally sensitive lands. State Sen. Mike Fasano, R-New Port Richey, spoke to the commission to address his concerns, imploring them to take an official stance on the permit to send a message to the state Department of Environmental Protection. #
Fasano, who recently metwith Environmental Protection Secretary Herschel Vinyard to discuss his concerns with the landfill, told the commission that the landfill proposal is not only environmentally unsound, but ultimately unnecessary. #
“Sen. Fasano spoke about the resource recovery plant that the county has operated for many years,” says Greg Giordano, Fasano’s chief legislative aide. “It has a long track record of successfully incinerating and turning the waste into energy. The operation of the plant makes the need for the landfill unnecessary.” #
The senator also encouraged the county commission to take an official position on the proposal. According to Giordano, Fasano believes the commission needs to take a vote to send a clear message of where it stands on the landfill issue. #
At one point during the Tuesday morning meeting, county attorney Jeffrey Steinsnyder remarked that it was his opinion that the county believes a land use amendment is required to go forward with the landfill, while Angelo’s does not. The land is currently zoned as “agricultural.” #
The commission also made clear that a comprehensive plan would have to be amended to accommodate the landfill. #
