The truth of the matter is that in North Carolina, any socioeconomic benefits from biotech jobs have been largely confined to the Research Triangle Area, an area heavily populated by transplants from other states. I'd wager a guess that few native or long-time residents have shared in the wealth that Burr talks about. For one thing, the secondary public school system in the state hardly prepares kids for employment or higher education opportunities - our system ranks something like sixth from the bottom in the country. Deep pockets of poverty exist in western and eastern stretches of the state where access to basic health services is nearly non-existant. Burr isn't up for reelection this year, but polls are showing that Elizabeth Dole could be facing a much harder race against challenger Kay Hagan than Dole's been used to.
