rssProtestors flood Florida Capitol to decry budget cuts, actions against unions

The first floor of Florida’s Capitol was flooded with hundreds of protestors delivering pink slips to Gov. Rick Scott today. #
They chanted: “Pink slip Rick!” “Fire Tricky Ricky!” “Where are the jobs?” #
Capitol police closed the door to the governor’s office, saying the commotion was making it difficult for employees inside to concentrate. Scott himself was far away, visiting the St. Lucie County Career Center, Florida Atlantic University and a Heritage Foundation leadership dinner at the Four Seasons in Palm Beach. #
Some of the protestors were members of community groups and campaigns representing the unemployed. Many were members of labor unions, who came to protest budget cuts, the privatization of state hospitals and bills moving through the legislature they said were anti-union. #
Sonya Roundtree, a school bus driver and chair of her local Service Employees International Union chapter in Pinellas County, said she had a problem with Senate Bill 830, which places new restrictions on unions’ political activities and ends the practice of automatic dues deductions from state the payroll. #
“I think they’re trying to starve the unions,” she said. #
Rep. Chris Dorworth, R-Heathrow, sponsor of the House version, said when the measure passed that it would “empower” union members by requiring unions to seek their approval for political expenditures. #
When the chanting and shouting died down, Roundtree described what it’s like to be the chair of a local union chapter. Members make political decisions as a group, with input from all the members. If she took positions they didn’t like, she said, she would risk losing her position. #
“They elected me,” she said. “They voted me in, and they can vote me out.” #
Gov. Scott, she added, is in a similar position. #

What amazez me is that we let all these right wing scumbags in in the first place. Get them all out. Time for nationwide re-calls of all republican and tea party members

Make coporations pay their share instead of $26 billion in profit no tax paid and $billions in tax back. We can balance the books tomorrow without taking anything away from the working man if we make deadbeat corps pay what they owe.

Let this be a lesson that sitting out elections because we aren’t happy with the nat’l Dems is not an option. That a known crook (who was handsomely rewarded…sound familiar?) could even get elected shows that the Regressives will always show up to vote.
The SCOTUS made damn sure there will be even more money flooding in from special interests and no way to compete with that…even with unions doing most of the heavy lifting. By now, it should appear obvious that the GOP is attacking not just the poor but wishes to destroy what remains of the middle class. Don’t allow it to happen again.
Time to turn this around and thanks to all who showed up and protested. It’s gonna take a bit more than blogging…it’s time for boots on the ground. Bring your pitchforks and torches

I agree with the pink slips! I wonder how many Florida voters are wishing they had chose better?Once a crook always a crook! How could anyone trust this man? I live here and I am afraid for my state!! This is not Good!!

gov scoot fiddles while rome burns. this should be a lesson to the fools in florida who voted this criminal in by not showing up at the polls or by actually pulling the lever . i’ll bet old charlie and kendrick are laughing in their beers along with alan grayson.
