DHS devising system to make it harder for immigrants to work illegally

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security is trying to come with a new system that would make it harder for illegal immigrants to fake legal working status, reports The Washington Post.

Currently, employers can check workers’ legal status using E-Verify (which, as of Monday, allows individuals in the District of Columbia, Virginia, Arizona, Colorado, Idaho and Mississippi to check their own employment eligibility status before applying to jobs, as part of a pilot program, according to DHS). But according to the Post, illegal immigrants skirt the system by using fake or stolen Social Security numbers. Thus, the department is contemplating using a credit rating giant, such as Equifax, to make it especially difficult to prove legal identity.

From the Post:

If workers had to use the verification systems in place to apply for a mortgage or a bank account, they would not only have to present a Social Security number to an employer, but also answer questions about their personal history and financial background to establish their identity.

[...]

Alejandro Mayorkas, director of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, said the government planned to use the initiative to evaluate how the third-party verification system worked, with a view to making the tool available to employers.

Private identification systems might reduce Social Security number fraud, but Mayorkas said he has concerns about how the federal government would deal with errors in third-party databases.

The plan is still in the beginning stages and might need congressional approval.

Is this the same DHS that just delayed Real Id from taking effect this May to Jan 2013? Now to get a job; we are supposed to tell the employer sensitive information so we can prove who we are? Meanwhile we still have NM, UT and WA who are still giving drivers licenses or cards to illegals.

Furthermore e verify doesnt cover all work. It leaves out independent cnotract work so illegals are still going to be working until we reform the system to include all work under the e verify system.

This is the same dept under Morton; head of ICE who refuses to deport ilegals when they find them working; who jsut sends them on their merry way to use their fraudent documents to get another job; and fines the companies a paultry amount as “they couldnt have known these people were not legally able to work” and who still doesnt have a system in place to know who is here on visas and when they actually leave; if they leave that is.

Why dont you stop wasting the billions you are given and actually do things that we know will work to stop illegals from being here? And one of which is taking the job away.

While wasting billion$ on two fruitless wars, an illegal immigrant who clean my dishes and move my lawn are hardly the concern of our nation. if American workers decide to work their bud off to clean tables and move the grass, then I will support action against illegal immigrants..lets get real, not angry..

HLS is a joke. Congress could EASILY require Social Security to work with the IRS to identify the illegal aliens, but won’t because the real power in the U.S. is the Chamber of Commerce – and they don’t want the slave labor to stop!
