Ellison cries during Muslim ‘radicalization’ hearing

Rep. Keith Ellison is known for his impassioned speeches, especially when it comes to religion. At last summer’s General Assembly of the Unitarian Universalist Association in Minneapolis, his fiery speech about Christianity touched on themes of unity and love. But today he testified not with bravado but through tears at New York Republican Rep. Peter King’s controversial Homeland Security Committee hearings on Muslim-American “radicalization.” Ellison, Congress’ first Muslim member, broke down while telling the story of 23-year-old Muslim American paramedic Mohammad Salman Hamdani, who died in the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center.

A first responder, Hamdani — who loved the Star Wars movies and sang in Handel’s “Messiah,” Ellison said, and “wanted to be seen as an All-American kid” — was initially thought by some to be involved in the attacks.

“Some people spread false rumors that speculated that he was in league with the attackers because he was Muslim,” Ellison said. “But it was only when his remains were identified that these lies were exposed. Mohammad Salman Hamdani was a fellow American who gave his life for other Americans. His life should not be identified as just a member of an ethnic group or just a member of a religion, but as an American who gave everything for his fellow Americans.”

The hearings have been “pilloried as an exercise in attention-grabbing ethnic-baiting and scapegoating and as an essentially unfair government-sanctioned exercise in Islamophobia,” as John Tomasic writes at the Colorado Independent. King, who is chair of the House Homeland Security Committee, defended the hearings today.

“To back down would be a craven surrender to political correctness and an abdication of what I believe to be the main responsibility of this committee — to protect America from a terrorist attack,” he said. “Despite what passes for conventional wisdom in certain circles, there is nothing radical or un-American in holding these hearings.”

Update: Minneapolis DFLers have offered their take on the hearings and Ellison’s words. “It’s simply wrong to single out the Muslim community,” said Rep. Phyllis Kahn in a statement. “Terrorism knows no single race, creed, or religion and alienating an entire population is not only incredibly intolerant and unjust, it undermines our goals of preventing terrorism here and abroad.”

“The Muslim community doesn’t deserve this treatment,” said Rep. Jim Davnie. “As Representative Ellison pointed out, they have helped foil several terror plots since 9/11. The Minneapolis Muslim community has developed a solid, trusting relationship with law enforcement, and hearings like these jeopardize that relationship.”

“I’m proud to stand with my US Representative and stand with our Muslim community,” said Rep. Karen Clark. “These are our friends, neighbors, colleagues and fellow citizens who deserve our respect, not suspicion and witch hunts.”

For the record: Not all men and women practicing Islam are bad people. What is bad is that they do not wish to tell on their fellow muslims(see something, say something). I hate it when they come together and rally againt Israel or this hearing. Why don’t they rally against sharia law, jihadist bombing throughout the world, honor killings and so much more. For now, I stand with Mr. King. Ellison stop crying those crocodile tears.

You are an idiot. Do you know all Muslims, and that none of them want to “tell on their fellow muslims (sic)?”

No, you don’t. And we are not in danger of succumbing to Sharia law any time soon.

Idiot.

TFT, your ideas are liberal insanity, but at least you signed your post “idiot” which was good example of honesty from a “name calling” liberal (oh, and congratulations for spelling it correctly – did you google it)?

Peter King was the only known terrorist at this hearing. His tie-ins with Sinn Fein & the IRA could be interpreted as his being an accessory to the terrorist murder of many civilians in the UK. The hypocrisy of his bloodied hands holding the gavel at this Racist Inquisition of an entire Religion enters into the Realm of pure Evil. The truth is not that Muslims produced those terrorists who bombed the WTC, but that our trusted Allies, Egypt & Saudi Arabia not only overlooked anti-American activity in their countries, but that, in the case of Saudi Arabia, helped fund the attackers. The fact that we set up these brutal dictators, supplied them with the arms to oppress their citizens, and then used up their oil (without benefit to the citizens of these countries) created the terrorist agenda of seeing America as the enemy. Seeking to escape oppression by US backed dictators, many Muslims came to America to seek an end to oppression & torture, because America was the land where everyone was treated with equality, dignity & Justice. Now we have this Nazi like Race & Religion baiting which stands in the annals of Infamy along with the obscene paranoia of a Julius Streicher. What would Peter King do if the UK authorities instituted an Inquiry into the radicalism of Irish-Americans and their relationship to the terrorist murder of UK citizens? I believe that they would have more factual basis to prosecute Peter King than he has to indict an entire Religion out of hearsay & stone cold prejudice. Rep. King violates both the letter & spirit of the US Constitution and its presumption of Innocence. Mr. King is presuming guilt without the benefit of indictment or trial. He is a disgrace to American Justice and a dangerous enemy of due process & our system of Law. Just because he’s not wearing a Swastika armband does not exclude Congressman King from the joining the ranks of those Republican Nazis out to destroy American freedom. We stand in great shame before the eyes of the World & History will condemn us for putting Mr. King into a position of power. Even Sharia Law at its mythic worst is not as intolerant as Peter King’s abuse of office. Let’s investigate him.

The way you’re throwing around “liberal,” the catch all conservative insult, doesn’t make you much better.

Pot, meet kettle. Kettle, pot.

And are you honestly paranoid and stupid enough to believe that less than 5% of the population will able to impose a set of laws that not even the majority of them follow, forcing an entire nation to abide by these laws? If so, what the hell is wrong with you? Do you know NOTHING about how our government works? Nothing TFT said is “insane” – unless you’re so far gone you can’t tell the damn difference anymore.

And what do you call Egypt, where the Muslim majority stood up beside the Coptic Christian minority against the extremist Muslims in that country, going so far as to form human chains to protect them? It’s so much easier to ignore things like that, isn’t it? Oh no, those Muslims weren’t speaking out at their extremists at all, were they? Get your head out of your ass.

Oh yes, and then there’s the Christian terrorist bombings right here in this country, and in Ireland. And there’s the Jewish bombings over in Israel, and all of the other religious groups that have their wingnuts. All Jews are reluctant to tell on their fellows who kill Muslims and Christians, and you’ll never see Christians telling on a man who shot an Abortion doctor, or planted a bomb at an abortion clinic, now will you?

What the hell was your point with that? Did you even HAVE one? “DE EBIL MOOZLIMZ IZ PLANTIN BOMBZ AN DEY GONNA BLO US ALL UP!” Because it’s only Muslims that do those things, right?

And the situation in Israel is far more complicated than “Israel good, Hamas/Arabs/Muslims/Brown People bad.” Put down the Bible and book up any halfway decent history book. Read some of the accounts of the Palestinians who under the perpetual second-class citizen hood Israel forces on them. There is no good or bad guy in that situation. I’m glad you hate it when they come together to rally against Israel. It just shows you know next to NOTHING about what’s going on over there.

Rally against Jihadist bombing? Like I said above you, what do you call what happened in Egypt, where the Muslims allied themselves against the Christian minority who were being terrorized by the more extreme elements of Muslim society? It’s so much easier to ignore that, isn’t it?

In the end, I concur with TFT. You’re an idiot, and your false olive wreath extended towards an attempt at plurality at the beginning of your statement reeks of bullshit.

Sorry, but they do not. Stop talking crazy. But it is QUITE true that 9/11 was NOT done by “Muslims” but by terroritsts, one of which was Osama Bin Laden, and the rest Saudis.

Put the blame where it belongs, and don’t make up stories out of ignorance. Also, do NOT include a whole group or religion in the grab-bag.

But I fear he’s accusing them of what he and his own church might do IF they were guilty of what he accused the Muslims of.

IF the Southern Baptists, for instance, were terror-radicalized (not that much of a stretch, if you ask me), then of course they would close ranks and support the effort, even flouting Congress and law enforcement in the process.

He only knows the impulse because he has it himself. But that DOESN’T mean that Muslims would do likewise.
