Fox News focus group in Iowa: President Obama is Muslim
On Sean Hannity’s program Monday night, pollster Frank Luntz hosted a focus group of Iowa Republican caucus-goers, gauging their reaction of President Barack Obama’s Sunday afternoon interview with Fox News’ Bill O’Reilly.
After a question by O’Reilly about the Muslim Brotherhood’s role in transitioning a government for Egypt, Luntz began to ask the Iowa Republicans why the meters showed them all having such a negative reaction to Obama’s answers.
One woman said she believed the president’s religious convictions guide his policies. When Luntz asked her to clarify, she said, “I believe that he is a Muslim.”
Luntz then asked the rest of the group how many believed Obama is Muslim. About a dozen, or nearly half, raised their hands.
“Now do you understand the implications of what you’re saying here,” Luntz began to ask. “What the media’s going to say about this group and about the Iowa Caucus voters in the future. Do you realize what you’re opening up here?”
After that comment, several other members of the focus group said they believed Obama’s religious belief is “liberalism,” which they said was “the most intolerant of all.”
The president is of course Christian, but some of the Republicans said they did not believe him.
This isn’t the first time Iowa has garnered headlines for questions about the president’s faith. Kim Lehman, one of Iowa’s three representatives on the Republican National Committee, was criticized last summer when she publicly questioned the president’s religion. In response, several prominent Iowa Republicans sounded off, with state Sen. Sandy Greiner saying she respects the point of view of anyone who says the president is a Muslim.
Gov. Terry Branstad said at the time that he would take the president at his word that he’s a Christian.
Luntz’ panels have been criticized as seeming too far right to be an accurate representation of any segment of the US population. The Pulitzer-prize winning website PolitiFact said Luntz coined the “Lie of the Year” in 2010, with the phrase “government takeover of health care.”
Luntz previously complained his airtime had been cut on Fox because his findings didn’t comport with the outlet’s orthodoxy, resulting from focus groups he conducted that ended up favoring Obama.
Also, on cable Monday night, on MSNBC, Lawrence O’Donnell concluded O’Reilly had interupted the president 43 times during the interview.

Hope the folks who watched the O’Reilly interview with the President because they idolize O’Reilly were able to hear and understand the practical and common sense position of our President in spite of the interviewer’s interruptions and his never ending need to speak his opinion over the guests.

We are dealing with a de facto Religious Test for the Presidency. While individuals have a right to belief, they don’t have the right to disqualify a president because of his perceived beliefs, unless they wish to alter the Constitution. This has been said very often, but Religious Chauvinism seems to be the way for Republicans to gain votes. There is so much emotionalism in this debate, that soon it will be a matter of Policy to exclude all but conservative Christians from the Presidency. Witness Mitt Romney, a Mormon, falling behind Sarah Plain in one poll. Non believers need no rights, anyway; they’ll all die in the Rapture.

And the weird thing is that the GOP and their Tea Party friends support Ayn Rand’s economic philosophies, which are counter to Christ’s teachings, since Rand was an atheist.

The hate driving this willfully ignorant belief about the president is founded on a ugly truth about many white Americans in the heartland and their wealthier, better educated counterparts on the coasts and in big cities: racism is alive and well in their hearts. They found ways to hide this fact from themselves but it’s readily apparent to even the casual observer. The heat and conviction of their beliefs isn’t politically driven as they would have us believe. Calling Obama the Neville Chamberlain of our time, or saying his religion is liberalism doesn’t get at the root of their hysteria. What lies beneath is a deep abiding belief that, under no circumstances, should a black man ever be in a position of executive authority. They believe, as Chief Justice Roger B. Taney, in Dred Scott v. Sandford (March 6, 1857) believed: black Americans are “…beings of an inferior order, and altogether unfit to associate with the white race, either in social or political relations, and so far inferior that they [black Americans] had no rights which the white man was bound to respect.”
“Why, the gall of that man to call himself President of the United States of America!’ they feel inwardly but would never say aloud.
So called conservatives such as these want to believe that the legacy of white supremacy is so far in the past that it longer reaches out to color our perspectives. But it does.
They no doubt want to see his birth certificate, too. They want to erase the fact of his Americanness. They want to call him anything but their own. He must be the dangerous “other” rather than a fellow American.
None of this would be happening if B. Hussein Obama were a white American man. You know that. I know that. And these idiots know that; they’re just too ignorant, hateful, and cowardly to say what’s in their hearts.

This is the most cogent and eloquent explanation of what is going on in middle America that I’ve read thus far.. What is most egregious is that the republicans use this ignorance and bigotry to win elections and have been doing so for decades. Why won’t anyone in the media hone in on this ugly truth? We leave it to Bill Mahar, Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert to raise the issue. I pray some politician will have the courage to say this out loud, on camera. So far, no one has the guts to defend Barack Obama. It’s unconscionable that we as a country let this ugliness persist. Right at this very moment, Michelle Bachman, Donald Trump and all the brown-nosers at CPAC are making birther jokes. Pandering to the ignorant white folks. Why is there no citizens movement organizing to push back against the lies and hate?

Actually, I would take those who made the “religion of liberalism” comments to be most sincere in their dislike of the President being a separate issue from his race. (That isn’t to say that they necessarily aren’t racist, just that the antipathy would have existed otherwise, as “liberals” are enough of an “other” to dislike on their own.) I’d offer the example of Clinton as evidence, of the background hatred of all things liberal*, regardless of skin color.
*Not that many of these people would be able to define what a liberal is, other that “those people who believe all this stuff that Rush Limbaugh says they believe.”

So sorry. Rand may have been an atheist, but that does not mean her economic principles were in opposition to Christianity. If you were familiar with either, you would know that.

1. Ayn Rand preached selfishness and condemned altruism. She railed against ALL religion and faith.
2. The following Bible verses are directly opposite of Rand’s philosophies.
Luke 3:11, Acts 2:44-45: 2 Samuel 12:1-5, Matthew 19:24, Matthew 5:1-11, Acts 4:32-35, Luke 7, Mark 10:17-23, Romans 13:6-7, 1 John 3:17.
Luke 3:11
John answered, “Anyone who has two shirts should share with the one who has none, and anyone who has food should do the same.”
Acts 2:44-45
44 All the believers were together and had everything in common. 45They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need.
Acts 4:32-35
that there were no needy persons among them. For from time to time those who owned land or houses sold them, brought the money from the sales 35 and put it at the apostles’ feet, and it was distributed to anyone who had need.
Romans 13:6-7
This is also why you pay taxes, for the authorities are God’s servants, who give their full time to governing. 7 Give to everyone what you owe them: If you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor.
1 John 3:17
If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person?
Matthew 19:24
Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.”
Conservative economics is Darwinism – Darwin was an atheist, Adam Smith was, and so was Ayn Rand (whom Rand Paul, Glenn Beck, and Sarah Palin worship).
Comment posted February 12, 2011 @ 8:31 pm
Christianity is about what one should do voluntarily of one’s own free will, not about what one SHALL be COERCED to do by the government. Rand was opposed to aggression and government coercion.
Coercion is not a Christian principle — even if it is for a “good” cause.
You do not understand Rand’s definition of selfishness. It was not the common usage where you think only of yourself and abuse other people in the process. It was “rational self interest” which prohibited the abuse of others.

Perhaps you are unfamiliar with William Jennings Bryan and the Social Gospel. Also, Frances Bellamy , who wrote the Pledge of Allegiance.
The Constitution is not what you Tea Partiers and Randists think it is. Freedom does not mean denying it to others because they are a different color or occupation. The Pauls do follow Ayn Rand and have cited her many times. As far as being Christian, if denying Christ’s care for the poor and downtrodden and advocating a cutthroat society is Christian – well, people of your ilk have been duped by Satan.
The Constitution empowers Congress to provide for the defense and general welfare. When one group of people is endangering the welfare of another (or plural in either case), then steps must be taken to correct this. When certain types of people, or the populace in general, is being preyed upon, then should the government step back and say, “OK, go ahead and ‘thereby reduce the surplus population’”. The current situation involves an elite justifying huge bonuses to themselves by cutting good hard-working middle class people and using the salaries they would have received to fatten the pockets of an atheist nation that is traditionally our sworn enemy. Trickle-down did not work in the 1920s and it wasn’t even trickle-out yet.
Basically, therfe is a class of people using Ayn rand’s philosophies to knock down others. Let’s say you invite 7 people to dinner and you have a pie to cut in 8 slices. The obvious gut feeling that every human has is to cut it in 8 equal pieces. But Uncle Tony is 77 and only needs a sliver, little Bobby was bad and maybe doesn’t get pie. Paris is on a diet, but will still take enough to satisfy her. Rufus has been rearranging your living room furniture, with Guido’s help. Those guys do deserve bigger slices. That leaves Martha, Gunther, and Sujatha with normal slices. Basically, what I am seeing is that Rufus and Guido have the freedom (guaranteed by the Constitution) to go and GRAB the slices given to Martha, Sujatha, Gunther, Uncle Tony, and Paris. Then, Rufus and Guido also justify their actions by citing Mosaic law and John Adams.
As far as bearing false witness, how many so-called Christians call Obama a Muslim. He drinks beer and eats pork – both counter to Sharia law. He may not be the type of Christian some people see i9n exclusivity, but then, there are many who feel that non-whites are not Christian.
Basically, saying that government should not help a 150K a year biochemist laid off so his company he has worked for for decades can move to China, simply because he was an employEE and not an employER, in effect calling him a second class citizen – THAT is not what the Founders intended. JESUS WEEPS AT PEOPLE LIKE YOU, who would justify the Pharisees taking the loaves and fishes for the rich man because the 5000 are “just employees.”
Darwin’s religious beliefs were not really mentioned. All you see is an atheist Darwin and assume he invented evolution because he was an atheist. He became one long after, when his daughter became sick; not an excuse, but to overcome atheism, you must analyze why or you will never sway the atheist (do you even know why atheism is popular in Europe; have you ever had to be a certain denomination just to be allowed to work; have you had to hide in an attic because of your religion because someone has pretended to be a better one?) You know who one of Darwin’s main philosophical influences was? Adam Smith (Anne Coulter’s hero).
Altruism is the right thing to do and should be voluntary. In 1929, the voluntary altruism was overwhelmed. Plus, back then, there were denominations who would only help those of their own. In fact, if you care about the country, you care about its people and understand that taxes are not a penalty any more than a utility bill or paying for groceries. You trust the government will help those less fortunate who need it and not those who send their money overseas.
In most cases, when someone has a complaint about what government does, it has to do with religion, race, or being able to do something that harms someone else (like Love Canal, for example). Without that, it is anarchy. In that case, why don’t we just fly through intersections at 100 MPH and blow smoke in other peoples’ faces. That’s freedom without restrictions. Why don’t we just get drunk at age 4? Why not just shoot people because we don’t like their color or looks? Why can’t we own slaves?

Interesting that, in criticizing these beliefs that Obama is Muslim, you rightly point out that his statement of faith should be accepted as is, because no one can know what is truly in anothers heart. And yet, you are happy to ascribe their beliefs – misguided as they are – to racism. How do you know what’s in THEIR heart? They could just be fools.

I am teaching a middle schoolers in a conservative area of Pennsylvania currently, and I was trying to teach them about how partisan politics have been an issue since the days of Adams and Jefferson. As an example I brought up how today you hear politicians attack each other in political commercials and on the news. I told them how in the last elections, the opposing side try to vilify our current president as a terrorist Muslim and non American. The students reactions nearly dumbfounded me, they said that I was wrong because their own parents had told them that Obama was exactly those things. There was not a single student in the class that would believe me when I said that Obama was an American! They said Obama had to be Muslim because of his name. This is a case of true brainwashing and lies in the case of the parents and children. The news outlets that perpetuate these lies and manipulate the ignorant should be ashamed of themselves.

True. They may be fools. But fools occur in a cultural and historical context. So when a fool – in spite of all the readily available information about Obama’s religion – continues to ignore the obvious truth, there must be some reason for that of willful ignorance. Do they respond like this to all Democrats? Unlikely Do they respond like that to democratic policies? Probably not. Then what’s different this time around about a democratic president espousing marginally democratic policies? Answer: it is his race. You know it, I know it: If a white president had said and done what Obama has, he would not have incurred this kind of wrath, this kind of deaf, loathing from so many white Americans.

How many black people registered (first time),so they could vote for the black man?
How many white people registered(first time) so they could vote for the black man?
How many blacks voted for him having no idea what his political views were?
How many whites voted…..same question?
Above Tope Secret has a video of Obama admitting he is muslim, in an interview. He corrected his freudian slip…I mean mistake…real fast.
Has he spent big $$$$ to hide his birth certificate?
