Outgoing governor Bill Richardson may be heading to North Korea to help head off hostilities between North and South Korea, according to The Washington Post. Richardson has been to North Korea multiple times and was a United States ambassador to the United Nations under Bill Clinton.

The Washington Post reported “there’s talk that outgoing New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson may be off to North Korea next week for a private chat with top officials at the invitation of key people in the nuclear crowd over there.”

Earlier this year, Richardson “lobbied fiercely” to go to North Korea. Former presient Jimmy Carter ended up going instead and secured the release of an American prisoner.

Last year, North Korean diplomats met with Richardson in Santa Fe.
