On March 7, 1980, Prepon was born in Watchung, New Jersey. She was the last of Marjorie and Michael Prepon's five children. Her father was an orthopedic physician, while her mother taught high school and loved to cook. Prepon's father passed away at the age of 49 while having heart surgery when she was 13 years old. Prepon completed his studies at the Total Theatre Lab in New York City after graduating from Watchung Hills Regional High School.
Prepon studied jazz and ballet dancing in addition to acting. This was useful when she was chosen to participate in the theatrical versions of Ascension Day and A Woman of Property. She had several modeling contracts because of her height, and she went to Brazil, Paris, and Milan for picture sessions.
In 1997, she debuted on the soap opera "They Go On," which was produced by Levi Strauss. Prepon's breakout performance came in 1998 when she submitted a taped audition for the new Fox comedy "That '70s Show." Prepon had the lead role in the 2005 movie "Karla," which was inspired on the real story of a crazy couple who tortured and killed three daughters. She served as executive producer of the poker television series "E! Hollywood Hold'em" that ran on the E!
Television Network the same year. She was chosen to play the lead character of Chelsea Newman in the NBC comedy "Are You There, Chelsea?" in February 2011. Her most recent endeavor was playing Piper Chapman's ex-girlfriend and former drug dealer Alex Vause in the July 2013 debut of the Netflix original series "Orange Is the New Black."
